CSC Trigger Background Rates

The major sources of CSC backgrounds - punch-through pions, neutron-related hits in chambers, and penetrating accelerator muons - are depicted here:

To set the scale, the raw rate of penetrating muons has been estimated from Pythia 5.7 in CMS/95-150 as about 100 kHz per unit of rapidity (Cwiok, Wrochna).

There is a note on the expected background rate from punchthrough (Wrochna, PostScript format).

The backgrounds and occupancies from neutrons and charged tracks (primary muons, decays, as well as punchthrough etc.) have been estimated and are summarized in the following histograms

The following is from Wrochna, Nov. 2000:

The following are from Fisyak, 1997:

For lots of details, see Yuri Fisyak's muon background web page, especially under "Section TDR" (at the bottom).

For lots of relevant distributions on neutron hits, such as the distribution of layers penetrated by neutron-induced hits, see this.
