<title>Inotroduction to CMSIM</title></head>

<h1 align=center>Introduction to CMSIM</h1>
<p>
CMSIM is a GEANT-based simulation package for CMS. It began as a pure GEANT
simulation. As we get more test-beam and other real data, it is incorporated
into CMSIM. </p>
<p>At present, the simulation exists in two separate versions of the CMSIM
package: the main package available from CERN, and the UC Davis version which
is much more accurate for endcap muons. Several people are working together to
incorporate the UC Davis version into the CERN version.</p>
<p>As of 14 April, most of the code from the Davis version has been installed in
the CERN repository. Thus, you should cease using the Davis version and install
the CERN version. This has several advantages: you will move to a unified
version that is supported by CERN, you will deal with all the c++ issues now
(which will only become worse as more and more code is ported to c++), and you
will have a version that (in theory) you can install yourself. Tim Cox is
working on installing the remainder of the UC Davis code in the CERN
respository: at last check is was about 6 changes.</p>
<p>In these pages you will find some basic installation instructions and some
tips to help you get started. I will add more information (such as a description
of all the keywords, what ntuples they produce, etc), ntuples and
other results as times goes on.</p>
